Radioactive Enemies Caused Bugs
31 Dec 2022 (New Year’s Eve) - Shared a parallax of the title screen. (Edit: 4 Jan 2023 - Probably should not have removed the parallax from the title screen…) 1 Jan 2023 - (New Year’s Day) - Began working on the new project. 2 Jan 2023 - Made the music for the title screen as well as a smooth transition. Also coded up a perfect text engine. 3 Jan 2023 - Added fast skip to the text engine, made the main menu, and started working a bit on the chat log. I want to be able to add multiple save files at once later on, but for now… 4 Jan 2023 - Uploaded the game engine, spent a half-hour trying to fix a problem with the camera that now supports widescreen. 5 Jan 2023 - Worked on the RightSide-360, the device that lets you view the stats, the chat log, and the levels. Added the scroll bar to the chat log, and added color to the names of people attending the chat log. Plus, the text engine now supports three more characters. 6 Jan 2023 - Another day, another way for awesomeness! I added a cutscene for later and added more sessions. Finally started working on levels and perfected the wall-sliding/jumping engine. Made the in and out engine for the levels. 9 Jan 2023 - HELLO, Right Side City! All I really did over the weekend was just add another platform, but I added more to it this time. I made two more soundtracks. I added eyes that will follow you, and lasers that will make the gameplay seem more cool! Also, finally made a death effect — for the lasers :) 10 Jan 2023 - Added the enemies and the checkpoints — so far, they’re both working to perfection! Added another death effect for the enemies, and finished the pause menu (woo-hoo!). Also added a speech frame for in-level dialogue. 11 Jan 2023 - BOOM! Added the blast cannons. BOOM! Finished Level 1! 12 Jan 2023 - Finished the results screen. Worked on Level 2. Added text below the difficulty that shows your best score as well as your fastest time. 13 Jan 2023 - Already made the replay engine. It only took me like what, one hour? It was easier than I thought! :D Also added a new menu to the RightSide-360 called “Replay,” where you can watch and load replays! 14 Jan 2023 - Added a username feature to the replays so that you can see who’s playing which level during each replay. 16 Jan 2023 - Added support for going back to the checkpoint for replays. 17 Jan 2023 - Made a transmission cutscene, again for later. Almost confused the Void Viper with Junebug - lol! ADDED AUDIO FILES TO THE CHAT LOG?! 18 Jan 2023 - Apparently the chat log could not hold so many clones. So I split up the sessions. Hopefully, no more test-sharing after this, because I do not want people seeing what I’m working on. Added a falling platform to the level I’m working on. 19 Jan 2023 - Made a preview for the new lighting system to be released sometime soon. Also, guess who made the honor roll in school? :) 20 Jan 2023 - Changed the chat log button to a desktop button where you can view the logs and the lightshow preview. Finished Level 2! 23 Jan 2023 - I’m back! And so is Olivia! I added a feature where enemies attack. ON A BOAT. 24 Jan 2023 - “It’s time for you to die!” —Mario. I added a DEATH ROUTE! 25 Jan 2023 - A swimming pool?! This game just gets better and better. Also added the spiked death effect (something I should’ve done ages ago). 30 Jan 2023 - Added the second checkpoint to Level 3. Also, you can now speedrun Level 2 in less than 30 seconds! Also, made a new kind of enemy that disguises itself as a trash bin. If you make contact, it will come out of the lid and grab you like regular enemies. 31 Jan 2023 - Time to take out the trash! When you defeat a trash enemy, it now tilts sideways and falls down like a normal trash bin instead of vanishing. Honestly, isn’t it amazing, the kinds of stuff you can do with non-tile-based platformers? :) 2 Feb 2023 - Made the stats system, which is very much like the campaign map for Rhythm Prism 3, but better. Also made a cloud system that contains the best score and time for each level worldwide, and so far, it’s not lagging! :) 3 Feb 2023 - Finally found out what was making moving platforms buggy. Finished Level 3! Added a secret platform that makes it easier to speedrun the level and is only unlockable if you’ve defeated the Void Viper on either mode. Now for the moment I’ve been waiting for — THE DEATH ROUTE! 4 Feb 2023 - The death route is already killing me. Anyway, I made it so that every time a player gets off a moving platform which has a dx or a dy that’s not a whole number, the player’s x and y position rounds to the nearest whole number. And as I suspected, this devlog, which used to be in the description for the project, has finally exceeded the (blasted) character limit and has been moved to a Google document. Also, I was using a Chrome extension that changes all fonts to Google Sans at the time :) 6 Feb 2023 - Tested Level 3. Apparently it’ll take at least 100 seconds (1:40 minutes) to clear it perfectly, even after using the aforementioned secret shortcut. But forget that, I’m through with vacation! Time for the OTHER moment I’ve been waiting for — LEVEL 4! And right now, it’s working like a charm! If you fall too deep in this level, a floating train will appear and run you over instead of the usual falling death effect. Anyway, I made the ‘game over’ screen. I FINALLY learned to make the player move properly with rotating lasers, and spent two hours fixing the buggy wall-jumping engine that should have taken only a few minutes… 7 Feb 2023 - I created a chart that lets you see what levels you have completed. You can find it in the Stats > Achievements screen. 8 Feb 2023 - Made a cutscene near the end of Level 4 where a teenage girl is playing Rhythm Prism and then gets teleported there. Fixed a bug where if you try to restart and are touching a laser, you lose a life instead. 9 Feb 2023 - Apparently, I accidentally deleted the enemy death effect when I fixed the restart bug. I had to make it again, and the end result was less than perfect. But forget that one. Also, when the girl appears, a boss phase now starts up. The player will become trapped in a “laser room” surrounded by two persistent lasers. Eyes will appear in the background, and warning signs will indicate which laser shoots down next. This is (without a doubt) the best boss battle I’ve ever made (excluding the ones featured in “Scratch Battle Gym” and the “Materialize” series). AND it was only supposed to be a side boss battle. Finished Level 4! I’ll give you a warning, though. It’s VERY HARD, even in Easy difficulty. And if you ever get frustrated playing it, you should know how it felt trying to verify that it could be perfected. It was a PAIN! But now I can work on Level 5! 10 Feb 2023 - I made a feature where you can also load sample runs if you want to load a replay. So far, there are only two, but I should make some more another time. Also, there was a bug where some decorations did not display properly, and after multiple trials and errors (not to be referenced with Level 3), I finally found out what it was! Plus, I finally got round to adding the HUD in levels — you know, the stuff that shows your score and your life count. 13 Feb 2023 - I’m BAAACK! I added a transmission cutscene at the end of Level 5. I updated the chat log so they could relate to the story a bit better. I also added some decoration to the Omniscience fight (which the Void Viper will have Omniscience trapped in his own prison for in the cutscene). Also, I added vines! 14 Feb 2023 - Spent an hour or two trying to fix the vine engine, but it works now, yay! AND I finished Level 5! 18 Feb 2023 - Finished the main story! I’m sorry I haven’t written much lately. But I’m in a rush, as the contest ends in 11 days. I still have to make the credits and the save engine. (And also, the switching between chat log sessions.) I suppose I’ll do those another time, and finish the game once and for all! Phew, that was fun! 20 Feb 2023 - Finished the save engine, and then the switching between chat log sessions! Finished everything! 10 Apr 2023 - Fixed a known bug in the level “Tropical and Error.”
